Xtreme Motor Sports tests each one of the vehicles modified by the company. On
April 18, 1999, the Hi-Performance Xtreme Motor Sports Suburban was driven from
Mission Bay to Ocotillo and back. The cruise control was set at 55 m.p.h. with
both air conditioners on. The air temperature was 87 degrees.
This
1999 GMC Suburban 454 weighs 6,606 lbs. We towed a 32' boat and trailer which
weighed 11,154 lbs. Total weight including 5 passengers and gas was 18,673 lbs.
Our test trip started in the Mission Bay area and we traveled in traffic for 5
hours on I-8 east to Ocotillo Wells and back, a total of 208.7 miles. This highway
has varied grades and altitudes from Sea Level to 4,500 ft. Grades range from
flat and level to 6%.
The
Suburban pulled the boat up Mountain Springs Grade, an incline of 6°, with no
hesitation. Cruise control at maximum speed limit, 55 mph, was held steady with
2500 to 3500 RPMs. At one point we were slowed when we got behind a motor home
travelling 40 mph. The traffic in left lane would not allow us to pass. Eventually,
we were able to change to the left lane and accelerate to 65 mph to pass without
hesitation and continued. With both air conditioners on, the engine temperature
ran between 160° and 190°. Outside temperature was 90°. Average gas mileage: 6.32
miles per gallon. Engine boost ran between 7" of vacuum and 4 1/2 lbs of boost.
